Letter to the Editor | These candidates will protect reproductive rights

Posted on July 16th, 2024 By: Nora Eckstein Sekowski

Soon you will receive your ballot in the mail and will have the opportunity to pick those candidates to go on to the general election in November. When I look at the ballot, a deciding factor for me is a candidate’s stance on abortion rights. A little over two years ago, the Supreme Court made that decision for many women in the United States with the Dobbs decision.

We may feel safe from the effects of Dobbs here in Washington, but we are not as safe as you think. Active forces are working fervently to insert their personal moral beliefs into laws which will curtail our privacy rights right here and across the United States. Abortion, IVF and birth control are on the table as far as the right-wing extremists are concerned.

Luckily, we have two excellent candidates running for State Representative here in the 26th Legislative District — Adison Richards for Position 1 and Tiffiny Mitchell for Position 2. Both of them are fierce defenders of women’s reproductive rights, which is why they are the only two candidates in both races who have been endorsed by Planned Parenthood. The other six, including a ‘Democrat’, who has said publicly that she agreed with Dobbs, remain either silent on the subject, or actively endorse the roll back of women’s rights through bills introduced or votes taken while they were in the state legislature.

Women across America are putting abortion access on the ballot through their votes and ballot initiatives. Here in Washington, we must vote for candidates that will protect our right to make decisions about our own bodies and families and keep government out of private decisions.
