Letter to the editor: Keep cats inside during this noisy season
Many cats are reported lost here in Gig Harbor.
Organizations advocating for animals do not advise allowing cats to roam outside. Cats are at the mercy of coyotes, raccoons, and dogs, as well as poisoned mice and cars.
Unfortunately, studies have shown that cats are responsible for the diminishing numbers of songbirds. Some may use that as an excuse to harm cats.
Cats can live very full lives inside. There are lots of sophisticated toys to keep indoor cats amused. According to a study from UC Davis, cats permitted to go outdoors live between 2 and 5 years, while those kept inside live between 10 and 15 years.
Cats may hide if injured or ill and may not be found outdoors in time to help them.
July 4th is a fraught time of year for cats with all the noise from fireworks. Cats who have lived outdoors (even feral cats) can be taught to live inside. Owners who love their cats keep them inside,
