All Narrows Bridge lanes open again
All westbound lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge re-opened Thursday morning, the Washington state Department of Transportation announced.
Two westbound lanes closed Monday for emergency repairs, causing long backups. Traffic was especially difficult during afternoon hours, with some drivers reporting hours-long commutes home to Gig Harbor from Tacoma.
WSDOT discovered a problem in an expansion joint on the morning of Monday, May 13. It closed the two lanes that afternoon.
Crews completed expansion joint repairs overnight Monday. But 48 hours were required for newly poured concrete to set up, dragging out the repairs.
“WSDOT would like to thank travelers for their patience while crews made repairs to the 1950s bridge,” a news release from the department said.
