BECU, Commencement Bank open new Gig Harbor locations

BECU and Commencement Bank recently opened new branches in Gig Harbor that were announced last year.

BECU’s first Gig Harbor branch is at 4784 Borgen Boulevard, suite A. The credit union hosted a grand opening for the branch on Aug. 8.

Tacoma-based Commencement Bank, meanwhile, opened its doors at the former Harbor General Store building at 7804 Pioneer Way on Aug. 5.

Commencement Bank previously operated a branch in the Peninsula Shopping Center on Judson Street. That was always a temporary home, though, until a remodel of the old Harbor General building was complete.

Harbor General closed in March 2023 after eight years at the prominent Pioneer Way building. US Bank and Security Pacific Bank previously operated out of the same office, built as a bank in 1980.

Commencement also operates branches in Tacoma, Auburn, Enumclaw and Olympia. Longtime Gig Harbor banker Allisha McVay manages the Gig Harbor branch.

The bank and the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce will host a grand-opening ceremony for the new branch at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27.

BECU

BECU opened its first Gig Harbor branch earlier this month, hosting a grand opening on Aug. 8. The location in Gig Harbor North — near Costco and Walgreens — is the credit union’s first in the city.

“We’re excited about our continued growth, and thrilled for our members in the area,” BECU Vice President Kim Lybecker said in a news release. “They’ve been requesting a location in Gig Harbor for a while, and we’re delivering, offering thousands of members more convenient services with live tellers and specialists.”

Previously, the closest BECU branches were in Silverdale and Tacoma.

The new location is one of the regional credit union chain’s largest, at more than 5,000 square feet. BECU operates more than 60 locations and plans to open several more in the next year.
