Harbor Happenings | Turkey Trot a chance to lose some calories ahead of the feast

The annual Turkey Trot 5K fun run kicks off at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day starting on Judson Street. Runners can begin lining up at 7 a.m. Bring two cans of food to donate to Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Foodbank and Food Backpacks 4Kids. Pre-event registration costs $20. Day-of-race registration is $40.
Salmon tour
Join Harbor WildWatch biologists at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, for the year’s final salmon walk along Donkey Creek. Meet at Donkey Creek Park on Harborview Drive and follow the creek to txʷaalqəł Estuary to spot the salmon returning to their spawning ground and learn about their lifecycle. Free and family friendly.
Winterfest
More than 150 artists and crafters – potters, painters, fabric and glass artists, woodworkers, sculptors and many others – will sell their wares at Peninsula High School’s Winterfest from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1. The annual fundraiser supports the school’s clubs and activities. Admission costs $5 per person. PHS is located at 14105 Purdy Drive N.W. Click here for information and a list of vendors.
Gnome hunt
The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance has hidden 15 gnomes along the waterfront. Find one, turn it in at a participating downtown merchant and be entered to win a gift certificate. It’s just one of the many activities the Alliance is sponsoring this holiday season. Click here to learn more.
Book discussion
The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Harbor History Museum to discuss “Before the Wind” by Jim Lynch. Growing up in the Puget Sound area, the Johannssen family has sailing in their blood, but the middle brother is puzzled by what caused his siblings to flee – one to Africa, the other to points unknown as a fugitive and pirate. All are welcome, whether or not you’ve finished the book.
Cookie decorating
The Beer Vault has a cookie decorating workshop from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1. All materials are included. The Beer Vault is located at 14004 Purdy Drive. Age 21 and over.

At the movies
Wednesday’s The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Cinemas in Uptown on Wednesday, Nov. 27, is “Elf” showing at noon and 6 p.m. On Sunday Dec. 1 the Flashback movie is “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Showtimes are noon and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
