Harbor Happenings | Gallery Row closes soon
There’s still time to purchase original works of art created by local artists at Gallery Row before the long-running gallery closes its doors for good on Jan. 20.
Arts & Entertainment Sponsor
Arts & Entertainment stories are made possible in part by the Gig Harbor Film Festival, a proud sponsor of Gig Harbor Now.
For more than three decades, the gallery has connected Gig Harbor residents and visitors with area artists who create one-of-a-kind paintings, glassworks, jewelry, ceramics, photography, as well as fun and functional items in fiber and wood.
Gallery Row opened in 1989, when five watercolor painters created a place they could meet, paint and show their work. Its original location was in the Finholm neighborhood, next door to the Shoreline restaurant (now Anthony’s).
More artists joined the co-op and, in 2002, with rental costs increasing and display space at a premium, the gallery moved to its present location at 3102 Harborview Drive, across from the Russell Building.
Since then it’s been a favorite place for shoppers, social events, Sip and Stroll stops, classes and meetings.
Until it closes Jan. 20, Gallery Row is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
At the movies
- The Met Opera’s film adaptation of Verde’s “Nabucco” lights up the big screen at the Galaxy Theatres Uptown at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10. Baritone George Gagnidze stars as the imperious king Nabucco, with soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska as his vengeful daughter Abigaille. Mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova and tenor SeokJong Baek are Fenena and Ismaele, and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy portrays the high priest Zaccaria. Daniele Callegari conducts.
- The Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy on Wednesday is “Airplane,” the off-the-wall comedy that spoofs every disaster movie cliché. Showtimes are 12:30 and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” showing at 11:15 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Live music
- Winds of the Sound (the Bremerton Symphony Quintet) brings their unique interpretation of classical tunes, circus marches and opera favorites to the loft at the Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12. Reserve tickets here.
- Kimball Coffeehouse hosts the Jim Basnight Band at 6 p.m. Friday. Basnight has recorded with a “who’s who” list of West Coast bands over his long career. Free and family-friendly.
- The Gig Harbor BoatShop has added a second show with Cantrip at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. “Cantrip” is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief. It aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in the band’s mix of swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three (sometimes four) rich voices. Click here for tickets.
