Harbor Happenings | This critter is critical to the Salish Sea. Learn more about it
Learn about the mysterious world of the pinto abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) at this month’s Cocktails and FishTales, Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Ocean5.
Arts & Entertainment Sponsor
Arts & Entertainment stories are made possible in part by the Gig Harbor Film Festival, a proud sponsor of Gig Harbor Now.
The pinto abalone is a species of marine snail found in the kelp forests and rocky reefs of the Salish Sea, where they play an important role in the ecosystem. They clean the rocky surfaces to encourage the growth of many species of kelp, and their voracious appetites have earned them the nickname “Roombas of the Sea.”
At Wednesday’s Cocktails and FishTales event, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Emily Loose will talk about WDFW’s efforts to protect and restore this endangered snail. Cocktails and FishTales is presented free by Harbor WildWatch. Wednesday’s event starts at 6 p.m. and can also be viewed live on the Harbor WildWatch Facebook page.
