Harbor Happenings | Restaurant Week starts soon; here’s who is participating

Downtown Gig Harbor restaurants will celebrate foods of many flavors during Restaurant Week, March 9 through 16.

Participating restaurants include Gig Harbor Thai Cuisine, 8825 North Harborview Dr.; Brimstone PNW Smokehouse, 7707 Pioneer Way; Devoted Kiss Café, 8809 North Harborview Dr.; Iscreamery, 7806 Pioneer Way; El Pueblito, 3226 Harborview Dr.; 7Seas Brewing, 2905 Harborview Dr.; B’s Bagels 3308 Uddenberg Lane; Brix 25 3315 Harborview Dr.; The Galley, 2906 Harborview Dr.; NetShed No. 9, 3313 Harborview Dr.; Cuvée Wine Shop, 3019 Judson St.; and Millville Pizza Co., 3409 Harborview Dr.

PHS theater production

Peninsula High School’s Drama Club presents “Mauritius” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8.

The play is about two sisters who struggle to claim what’s left of their family: A rare and valuable stamp collection. The production is the first collaboration between PHS and Actorcraft, a local acting studio that produces professional-grade theater.

“Mauritius” contains strong language and is recommended for audiences ages 15 and older. Ticket prices range from $25 to $75. Order tickets here. Peninsula High is at 14015 Purdy Drive.

Education fundraiser

The Peninsula Schools Education Foundation hosts a “Mission to Inspire” fundraising breakfast at 8 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Canterwood Country Club. Featured speakers are Chris Sembroski and Justin Towner. Sembroski is a Gig Harbor resident who was a crewmember of the first all-civilian SpaceX mission. Towner is the Innovation Specialist at Pioneer Elementary School. Tickets cost $75 and can be ordered here.

Live music

After taking home the first place trophy at the Quincy Square Jazz Festival in Bremerton last month, the Gig Harbor High School jazz band will play a spring concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at GHHS auditorium, 5101 Rosedale St. The free concert will feature performances by all of the GHHS bands.

On Tuesday, March 11, the GHHS bands will compete in the Regional High School Band Festival at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Vocalist Harley Lampkin brings her blend of pop, jazz, show tunes and originals to the loft at Olalla Winery Friday, March 7. Music starts at 6: 30 p.m. Reserve tickets here.

Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic every Thursday, with signups at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, March 7 the King Com Beau band takes the Kimball stage at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Free and family friendly. The coffee shop is at 6659 Kimball Dr.

At the movies

The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on Wednesday, March 5, is “Shrek” playing at 1 and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “Moonstruck,” a light-hearted comedy about an Italian-American Brooklyn family starring Cher, Olympia Dukakis and Nicholas Cage. Showtimes are 12:30 and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Civic Center on Grandview St. Tentative agenda items include changes to council guidelines and approval of an amendment to a lease agreement with the YMCA for Phase 1A of the Sports Complex. There will also be a presentation about the city’s stormwater management program.

City Council member Jeni Woock hosts Jeni Listens at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Cutter’s Point Coffee in Olympic Village.

Mayor Mary Barber invites residents to join her for conversation and coffee on the first Wednesday of each month. The next Coffee with the Mayor takes place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Distilling on the corner of Pioneer Way and Harborview. Residents and business owners can also schedule one-on-one meetings with the mayor Tuesdays between 2 and 4 p.m. Sign up here.

Engage Gig Harbor, a local nonprofit dedicated to bringing together citizens and government officials, will host a community discussion about city operations and the duties of elected officials, led by Pierce County Councilmember Robyn Denson and former state Rep. Spencer Hutchins. The forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Club at the Boatyard, 3117 Harborview Dr. (upstairs). Both Denson and Hutchins also served on the Gig Harbor City Council.

Legislative town halls

All three 26th District legislators have scheduled town hall meetings for the coming weeks. Local events include:

State Sen. Deb Krishnadasan: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Swift Water Elementary, 10811 Harbor Hill Dr.; and 5510 Key Peninsula Hwy., Home.

State Rep. Michelle Caldier: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Key Peninsula Civic Center, 17010 S. Vaughn Road; and 6 p.m. March 15 at Swift Water Elementary, 10811 Harbor Hill Dr.

State Rep. Adison Richards: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 15, at the Gig Harbor campus of Tacoma Community College, 3993 Hunt St.; 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Nichols Community Center, 690 9th Ave., Fox Island; and 10 a.m. to noon April 12 at the Key Peninsula Civic Center, 17010 S. Vaughn Road.
