Harbor Happenings | Circus of Second Chances visits Gig Harbor

Step right up, folks, the circus is in town.

The Circus of Second Chances will stage two family-friendly performance – at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 29, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Ethereal Arts Northwest at 3201 Jahn Ave. The Circus of Second Chances is presented by Acrobatic Conundrum,  a trio of veteran acrobats who do Cyr wheel, rope acrobatics, hand-balancing and other feats of derring-do.

The Sunday show includes a question-and-answer session with the performers. Tickets cost $35 for general admission; $15 for youth under age 15; $18 for seniors, students and military personnel and $100 for VIP seating. Order tickets here.

Crab feed

The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation hosts an old-fashioned crab feed from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Eagles Club, 4425 Burnham Drive. It’s an all-you-can-eat feast of Dungeness crab, salad, pasta, rolls and dessert with live music, games and a raffle. Bring your own crab crackers and a big appetite. Tickets are $8 to $540. The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s crab feed is Saturday, March 29, at the Eagles hall on Burnham Drive.

Beach walks

Harbor WildWatch staff will lead low tide beach walks to see some of the sea creatures that make their homes in the Salish Sea tidelands.

  • Monday, March 31– Sunrise Beach Park – 1 p.m. Meet in the parking area
  • Tuesday, April 1 – Fox Island Sandspit – 1:30 p.m. Meet on the lawn just inside the lower gate

Art show opening

A new art show called “Collaborative Identity: A Dual Exhibition by Hanna Ra and Emily Won” opens Monday, March 31 at Gig Harbor’s Tacoma Community College campus. The show is in the main lobby, open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shenandoah stories

Learn about the restoration of the purse seiner Shenandoah in Scarfs, Bungs and Big Knees, a free presentation at the Harbor History Museum, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27.

The Shenandoah is historic commercial fishing boat, built at Skansie Shipyard and operated by two prominent Gig Harbor fishing families for 73 years. It will anchor the history museum’s Maritime Gallery, due to open next month.

Wine tasting

Two Loons Winery will host free tastings of their 2023 alvarinho, 2018 merlot, 2020 Columbia Valley cabernet, 2019 Sheryl’s Syrah and a Loon Labs winemaker’s choice on Sunday, March 30. Two Loons is located at 9422 22nd Ave NW.

Live music

Olalla Winery will host Friends, playing pop and classic rock on acoustic guitars Friday, March 28. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. Reserve tickets here.

My Guilty Pleasure takes the stage at The Float at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29. The Float is located at 4511 Sherman Drive in Purdy.

At the movies

The Spring Fest Movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on March 25, 26 and 27 is “The Great Muppet Caper” with Kermit the Frog, The Great Gonzo and Fozzie Bear. Showtimes are 11:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25; 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26; and 11:15 and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.

The Spring Fest movie starting Friday, March 28, is “Beethoven” – starring a slobbering St. Bernard dog. “Beethoven” showtimes are 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 28; 10:15 a.m. Saturday, March 29; 10 a.m. Sunday, March 30;  and 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1. Spring Fest movies are just $2.

The Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy on Wednesday, March 26, is “Donnie Darko” playing at 12:30 and 6 p.m. The flashback movie on Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, is “The Mummy,” a rousing action adventure filled with romance and humor that revives one of Hollywood’s most famous monster classics. The Mummy showtimes are 7:15 p.m. on March 29; 12:30 and 6 pm. on March 30. Flashback movies are just $5.

The Film Festival’s Monday Movie for March is the award-winning documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless” about a brilliant songwriter, starring Cher, Jennifer Hudson, Kesha, LeAnn Rimes, Randy Jackson, Common and Gloria Estefan. “Relentless” plays one time only, Monday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council will meet for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27, to discuss Business and Occupation taxes. Study sessions are held in the Civic Center on Grandview Street and can also be accessed via Zoom. The city’s design review board will meet at the Civic Center on Thursday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers.
