Harbor Happenings: A little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll

This week’s musical high note is a sold-out performance at the Gig Harbor BoatShop by Kathryn Claire and Margot Merah.

Portland-based Claire plays violin, guitar and ukulele. Merah lives in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They share a love of music, harmony singing and storytelling. They play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 21, at the BoatShop, 3805 Harborview Dr.

Other musical offerings this week:

  • This week’s Summer Sounds at Skansie features Casey and Company with their take on new and classic country. The free performance starts at at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Skansie Brothers Park.
  • The Eagles tribute band Victims of Love plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, as part of PenMet Parks’ Summer Concerts at Semhel series. Sehmel Homestead Park is at 10123 78th Avenue NW
  • Gig Harbor’s own Shy Boys play a free show at the Uptown Pavilion at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 20.
  • Friday Gail Davies brings her Nashville sound to the Olalla Winery to kick-off the Music at the Vineyard outdoor concert season at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 21. Click here for reservations.

At the movies

  • Wednesday’s Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy Theatres Gig Harbor is “Shrek 2.” Showtimes are 11:40 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 23, the Flashback Cinema movie is “Friday the 13th” at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
  • The SummerFest movie at the Galaxy is The Bad Guys” ­at 10 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 25.  SummerFest movies are just $2. Show your ticket and get a $3.50 treat at the concession stand.

Wine tasting

Sample Two Loons Winery’s latest locally produced vintages from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 22. This week’s tasting includes 2022 Viognier; 2017 Patience ­– Cabernet Franc; 2018 Merlot and 2017 Petit Verdot. Two Loons is located at 9422 22nd Ave NW.

  • The Gig Harbor Waterfront Farmer’s Market is from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Skansie Park with farmers, bakers, crafters and more.
  • Food Backbacks 4 Kids provides free sack lunches for kids of all ages from noon to 1 p.m., or while lunches last, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Locations are at the Gig Harbor Skate Park, 3510 Grandview St.; Gateway Park, 19495 Highway 302; and Home Park, 17220 8th Ave Ct.  on the Key Peninsula.
  • The Arletta Schoolhouse, 3607 Ray Nash Drive NW, hosts a free Senior Social  from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays with fellowship, games, coffee and light snacks. Registration is not required.
  • The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance provides guided tours of downtown Gig Harbor on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Wednesday tour, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., is called “Skiffs and Spirits.” It starts at the Harbor History Museum and ends at Heritage Distilling. The Saturday tour, “Wonders on the Waterfront,” runs from 10 a.m. until noon. It starts at Donkey Creek Park and ends at the Maritime Pier. Each free tour is approximately 1.5 miles long. No transportation is provided at the end. Presented by the Downtown Waterfront Alliance.

City Council

  • The council will review possible changes to the city’s monthly rate schedule Thursday at 3 p.m. The study session takes place in the Community Rooms at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street, and online via Zoom.
  • The council’s regular meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, at the Civic Center.
