Harbor Happenings | Curl up with a good book
We might call this “Book Week” in the harbor, with discussion groups and story times happening on several days. The events are free, and no reservations are needed.

Harbor WildWatch hosts Salish Sea Storytime at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Marine Life Center, 3207 Harborview Drive. Stories are geared to kids ages 2 to 5, but all ages are welcome.
Invitation Bookshop hosts a discussion with authors Heather McBrean (“Wedding Dashers”) and Eric Connor (“Unromance”) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. Invitation Bookshop is located at 5125 Olympic Drive No. 104.
The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Harbor History Museum. Bring a book that you’ve enjoyed and give a short talk about it. Books by Pacific Northwest authors, or those that relate to the Northwest are favored, but any book is OK. All book lovers are welcome, even if you haven’t had a chance to read something. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive.
Pier into the Night
Join biologists from Harbor WildWatch at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 to see what’s lurking in the water beneath the Maritime Pier. Scuba divers with underwater video cameras will project live images of what they see onto a big screen set up on the pier. A touch tank allows kids to interact with sea creatures. Free; all ages are welcome.
Wine tasting
Two Loons Winery will sample five of their favorite varieties from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. Featured are the winery’s 2022 viognier; 2018 merlot; 2018 moo-zhur-in (100% malbec); 2019 Sheryl’s Syrah and a winemaker’s choice from their Loon Labs collection. Two Loons is located at 9422 22nd Ave. NW. Free; no reservations needed.
Trivia and cider
Locust Cider, 3207 57th Street Court, hosts Trivia Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Put together a team of two to six players and test your knowledge while sipping locally made cider.
Live music
The Foundlings play contemporary and traditional Irish music in the loft at the starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Olalla Winery. Purchase tickets here.
At the movies
The Met Opera’s 2025 performance of Verde’s “Aida” will be shown on the big screen at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. Soprano Angel Blue makes her Met debut in the title role as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country; Mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi is Aida’s Egyptian rival Amneris and tenor Piotr Beczała is the soldier Radamès. The cast also features baritone Quinn Kelsey as Amonasro and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Ramfis. Showtime is 1 p.m.
The Flashback Cinema movie on Wednesday, Jan. 29, is “The Princess Bride” playing at 12:30 and 6 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 1, it’s “Gone With the Wind.” Showtimes are 1 and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Civic Center. Discussion items include crosswalk markings for the 38th Avenue, updating the Transportation Impact Fee, and legislation related to building permits. Council meetings can also be accessed via Zoom.
Sunday, Feb. 2, Indivisible Gig Harbor will hold a re-organizing meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Point Fosdick Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Drive. For information click here.
