Harbor Happenings | ‘Fish Wars,’ rope-splicing class and more
Harbor History Museum’s annual meeting takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown.

In addition to learning about programs and events planned at the museum in 2025, guests will also be treated to a showing of the documentary film “Fish Wars.” The movie tells the story of Washington tribes’ decades-long battle to reclaim their treaty-guaranteed rights to fish in their usual and accustomed places, and the 1974 “Boldt Decision” that restored those rights.

Rope-splicing class
Learn the history and tools used for three-strand splicing and whipping, double braid splicing, rope work and more in a Marlinspike Seamanship class at the Gig Harbor BoatShop from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27. Suitable for ages 12 and older.
Fee is $40 for BoatShop members or $45 for non-members. (This is a re-scheduling of an earlier class that was cancelled.) Register here.
Free self-defense training
Learn practical self-defense techniques to use in real-life situations from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. The class is sponsored by the Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Coalition. It’s free and is suitable for all ages.
Masquerade ball
Middle-school kids are invited to a masquerade ball on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Gig Harbor High School, 6101 Rosedale Street. It’s an evening of costumes, dancing and refreshments geared to ages 11 to 14. Admission is $15 for the event sponsored by PenMet Parks. Make reservations here.
Storytime for kids
Harbor WildWatch hosts Salish Sea Storytime from 11:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Jan 22, with stories geared to kids ages 2 to 5. Free; no RSVP required.
Live music
The True Romans play pop, blues, rock and other classics from the last 60 years on Friday, Jan. 24 at Kimball Coffeehouse. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. Free; all ages are welcome.
Wounded Mic makes their first appearance in the Loft at Olalla Winery Friday, Jan. 24 starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15. Reserve tickets here.
Blood drive
The American Red Cross hosts a blood drive on Monday, Jan. 27 at the Civic Center 3510 Grandview St. Schedule your donation time here. The Red Cross is experiencing an emergency shortage of platelets and types O-negative and B-negative blood.
At the movies
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on Wednesday, Jan. 22, is “Interstellar,” showing at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday Jan. 26, the Flashback movie is “The Princess Bride.” Showtimes are 12:30 and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
Opera lovers will enjoy the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Verdi’s “Aida” on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Galaxy. The cast includes soprano Angel Blue making her Met debut as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country, mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as Aida’s Egyptian rival Amneris, tenor Piotr Beczała as the soldier Radamès, baritone Quinn Kelsey as Amonasro and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Ramfis. Showtime is 9:30 a.m.
Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27. Agenda items include an amendment to the YMCA’s lease agreement for Sports Complex Phase 1A and an amendment to council guidelines. Finance Director Dave Rodenbach will provide a quarterly budget report. Council meetings take place at the Civic Center and are also accessible via Zoom.
