Harbor Happenings: Rhythm and Blues Festival, Tyee Cup and more
The Gig Harbor Rhythm and Blues Festival is from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club.

Scheduled to perform are Billy Stapelton, All Funk ‘n’ Games, Roeman & the Whereabouts, 9, Magical History Tour, The Profits, Red House and HD Fusion with Maddy Dullum.
The event also features a beer and wine garden, food trucks and vendors.
Tickets cost $30 in advance or $35 the day of the event. Children 12 and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased at Harbor Barber, Finholms grocery and Kimball Coffeehouse. Proceeds benefit the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation.

- Good Day Sunshine plays Beatles tunes at Summer Sounds at Skansie Park, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8. Next week (Aug. 15), it’s the Profits, playing everything from Johnny Cash to the Violent Femmes.
- Emerald City Throwdown closes the 2023 Uptown Summer Concert Series at the Uptown Gig Harbor Pavilion. The funk band plays at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10.

- If opera is more your style, the Met Summer Encore presents “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Galaxy Theatres Uptown at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9. This 2014 production of Rossini’s madcap comedy features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, tenor Lawrence Brownlee and baritone Christopher Maltman. Michele Mariotti conducts.
Forecast calls for cleats and shin guards
More than 160 youth soccer teams will participate in the Tyee Cup soccer tournament Aug. 11 through 13 at sites around Gig Harbor, bringing thousands of players, parents and fans with them.
Tournament games are played primarily in Gig Harbor, including at Sehmel Homestead Park, Rosedale Park, Tacoma Community College-Gig Harbor, Peninsula and Gig Harbor high schools, Harbor Ridge Middle School, Goodman Middle School and Harbor Heights Elementary School.
Games begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, and continue through Sunday. The Harbor Soccer Club sponsors the tournament. For information, click here.

- Upcoming movies in the Galaxy Uptown’s family-oriented SummerFest movie series include: “Spirit Untamed” at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8; and “Peter Pan” at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15. Tickets to SummerFest movies cost just $2.
- Upcoming movies in Galaxy’s Flashback Cinema series include: “The Twilight Saga – New Moon” at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9; and “Inglorious Basterds” at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13. Tickets to Flashback movies cost just $5.
- PenMet’s free Movie in the Park at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, is “Shrek.” Movies are at Sehmel Homestead Park, 10123 78th Ave. Pre-movie activities begin an hour ahead of showtime and include yard games, bubble fun, chalk art and more. with guest performances by Mr. Pleasant. The Kiwanis Club will be collecting nonperishable food items for Gig Harbor Peninsula-FISH Food Bank.
Food drive
Harbor Montessori School and the Downtown Waterfront Alliance are hosting a food drive at Thursday’s Farmer’s Market, from 1 to 6 p.m. Nonperishable food donations can be made at the Kid’s Corner.
Free lunches
Food Backpacks 4 Kids distributes free, nutritious sack lunches for kids of all ages from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Locations are Gateway Park, 10405 Highway 302; the Gig Harbor Skate Park, 3510 Grandview Street; Home Park, 17010 S. Vaughn Road; and the Key Peninsula Civic Center17220 8th Avenue Ct.
City meetings
The city of Gig Harbor is updating its Comprehensive Plan. The first of three Housing Element workshops is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Civic Center.
The City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14. The city will post the council agenda later this week.
