Harbor Happenings | This 5K hits the streets on Saturday — no foolin’
The first Fools Run 5K race hits the streets of Gig Harbor on Saturday, April 5.

The Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce is staging the event, which starts at 5 p.m. at the chamber office on Judson Street. Registration costs $45. Run packets, t-shirts and other race memorabilia can be picked up from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 4, and between noon and 5 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Chamber office, 3125 Judson Street.
The course starts on Judson Street and proceeds north on Harborview Drive to the intersection of North Harborview and Peacock Hill, then loops back. Those roads will be closed to traffic between about 5:15 and 6:20 p.m.
The La Plancha Mexican food truck and a Dick’s Drive-Thru food truck will offer post-race refreshments and Hop Pharm will host a celebration from 5 to 9 p.m.
The chamber encourages runners to dress up for the April Fools’ Day-themed run.
Book group meeting
The Gig Harbor Literary Society book group meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Harbor History Museum to discuss this month’s book, “Bear” by Julia Phillips.
“Bear,” set on San Juan Island, is about sisters with deepening conflicts and the power of attraction to the magic and danger of nature. All are welcome to attend, whether or not you’ve read the book.
Find the Sasquatch
Starting Tuesday, April 1, PenMet Parks is sponsoring a Great Sasquatch Hunt at four local parks. Pick up a passport book at any of the parks then, in your passport book, record all the Bigfoots you find. You can also take photos and post them on social media, tagging PenMet Parks. The location of the hunt changes each week, and at the end of the hunt someone will win a prize.

Low tide beach walks
Take advantage of this week’s low tides and join Harbor WildWatch biologists to learn about critters that live in the water at the Purdy Spit at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2. Meet at the boat ramp. There’s also a beach walk at Tacoma’s Titlow Beach at 2 p.m. that same day, starting at the lookout platform. WildWatch activities are free and family-friendly.
Live music
Mark Hurwitz and Gin Creek take the stage at Kimball Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4. Free and family friendly. Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays.
Also on Friday, Budapest West plays in the loft at the Olalla Winery, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a unique blend of modern electronic and rare instruments. Reserve tickets here.
Friday is open mic night at the Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Drive. All skill levels are welcome to perform. On Saturday, April 5, Audrey Collins covers pop, country, rock and easy listening tunes at the Beer Vault starting at 7 p.m.
Special events
Locust Cider will host an Easter egg hunt and drag bingo event at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, at 3207 57th Street Court (next door to The Inn at Gig Harbor).
PenMet Parks presents a free Swing into Spring dance from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Rosedale Hall. Registration is required.
At the movies
The Spring Fest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on April 1, 2 and 3 is “Beethoven.” Showtimes are11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1; 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m on Wednesday, April 2.; 11:30 am. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3.
Starting April 4, the Spring Fest movie is “The Little Rascals” – with Alfalfa wooing Darla while his rascally pals try to sabotage the relationship. Showtimes are 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, April 4; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6; 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8. Spring Fest movies are just $2.
The Galaxy’s Flashback movie on Wednesday, April 2 is “The Mummy,” showing at 6 p.m. On Sunday, April 6, it’s “The Notebook,” a touching romance about two young lovers in the 1940’s whose relationship is tested by war and class distinctions. Showtimes are 12:30 and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
Civic engagement
Mayor Mary Barber meets with constituents in 30-minute one-on-one sessions between 2 and 4 p.m. Tuesdays. Click here to schedule a meeting. Barber also hosts a coffee with constituents on the first Wednesday of every month. On April 2, she’ll be at Davenport Coffee from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Davenport is located at 5275 Olympic Drive (next to Harbor Greens).
The city parks commission meets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Civic Center on Grandview Street to reconsider its name recommendations for Sports Complex Phase 1B, and begin planning for Parks Appreciation Day.
Attorneys from TacomaProBono will be on hand from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Civic Center to answer questions about landlord-tenant relationships, rent issues, divorce and other civil law issues. Free.
