Harbor Happenings: Art Walk strides into the New Year

Posted on January 3rd, 2024 By:

The holiday decorations are coming down, kids and teachers are back in classrooms and things are returning to a regular schedule as the calendar turns to a new year.

On Saturday, Jan. 6, downtown galleries will be open until 5 p.m. for the year’s first Art Walk. Work by more than 50 local artists will be on display and most galleries will have live art-making demonstrations from 1 to 3 p.m.

Photographer Chuck Flewelling will talk about his work at Ebbtide Gallery, 7809 Pioneer Way.

Harbornest, 3311 Harborview Drive, will showcase encaustics and paintings of Lisa Sweo Eul, who will be on hand to show how she creates them.

Mavi Contemporary Art Gallery will feature new work by Lea Basile-Lazarus.

Waters Edge Framery offers 20 percent off framing projects and Woodstock Gift Gallery will have $25 off on all in-stock Houston Lew “Spiritiles” — handmade inspirational glass-enameled copper tiles.

Pier into the Night

Join the team from Harbor WildWatch at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, for Pier into the Night to see what’s lurking under the Maritime Pier (next door to the Tides). Divers will project live video images onto a big screen set up on the pier and staff biologists will describe what’s being shown.

Music

Singer-songwriter Carl Tosten brings his finger-style guitar playing to the Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5. Reserve tickets here.

Gypsy-grass folk band Octopus Ballet plays a free, all-ages-welcome show at Kimball Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Kimball Coffeehouse on Kimball Drive.

At the movies

Opera lovers, take heed: the Met’s performance of “Nabucco” shows on the big screen at the Galaxy Theatres Uptown at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, with baritone George Gagnidze as the imperious king Nabucco and soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska as his vengeful daughter Abigaille. Mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova and tenor SeokJong Baek are Fenena and Ismaele, whose love transcends politics, and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy repeats his portrayal of the high priest Zaccaria. Daniele Callegari conducts Verdi’s exhilarating early masterpiece, which also features the ultimate showcase for the Met chorus, the moving “Va, pensiero.”

The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on Jan. 7 and 10, is “Airplane,” the off-the-wall comedy that spoofs every disaster movie cliché. Showtimes are 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7; and 12:30 and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10. Flashback movies cost just $5.
