This weekend’s Dragon Boat Flea Market has an abundance of books, toys, sporting goods, art, collectables and other treasures for sale at bargain prices at the Eagles Hall. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10.
Early bird shoppers can get a sneak peek at 9 a.m. Friday for $10 cash. Otherwise admission is free. Proceeds from sales support the Gig Harbor Dragon Boat team. The Eagles Hall is at 4425 Burnham Drive.
Chowderfest and Restaurant Week
The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance’s Restaurant Week promotion runs Sunday, March 10, through March 17, with 15 restaurants and tasting rooms participating.
Kicking off festivities on Saturday, March 9, is the alliance’s Chowderfest on Saturday, March 9. Tickets to Chowderfest are sold out, but many restaurants will still have chowder on their menus – in addition to other tasty offerings – during Restaurant Week.
Establishments participating in Restaurant Week include 7Seas Brewing, Brimstone, Brix 25, Cuvée Wine Shop, Devoted Kiss Café, El Pueblito, Gourmet Burger Shop, Gig Harbor Thai Cuisine, Heritage Distilling, Iscreamery, Millville Pizza Co., Morso, Netshed No. 9 and The Tides Tavern.

Book discussion
The Harbor History Museum hosts a discussion of Seattle author Timothy Egan’s book “A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Clan’s Plot to Take Over America and the Woman Who Stopped Them” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. “A Fever in the Heartland” counters the myth that the Ku Klux Klan was only a Southern institution. The discussion is open to everyone, even if you haven’t finished reading the book.
Live music
- The Gig Harbor High School band will play its spring concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in the GHHS auditorium. The concert is free; seating is first-come, first served. GHHS is located at 5101 Rosedale St.
- The Harbor Winds Concert Band continues its 2023-24 season with a Young Artists Concert in the GHHS auditorium starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10. The program will showcase advanced music students from local middle and high schools. Peninsula High School trumpeter Riley Dykman and Gig Harbor High School flautist Taylor Robinson will be the featured soloists. The concert is free but donations are accepted. GHHS is located at 5101 Rosedale St.
- The Trailer Park Kings play 1970s rock at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Kimball Coffeehouse. Doors open at 6 p.m., admission is free and all ages are welcome.
- Two Macs and Friends play a blend of acoustic pop and Latin jazz at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Olalla Winery. Reserve tickets here.
At the movies
The Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy Theatres Uptown on Wednesday, March 6, is “The Land Before Time” playing at noon and 6 pm. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “The Quiet Man,” the classic story of a retired American boxer who finds love when he returns to the Irish village of his birth. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara star. Showtimes are 11:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
On Saturday, March 9, opera lovers can experience the Met Opera’s performance of “La Forza del Destino,” Verdi’s grand tale of ill-fated love, deadly vendettas and family strife. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts, with soprano Lise Davidsen as the noble and tormented heroine, Leonora. Director Mariusz Treliński plays Forza and sets the scene in a contemporary world. The cast also features tenor Brian Jagde as Leonora’s forbidden beloved Don Alvaro; baritone Igor Golovatenko as her vengeful brother Don Carlo; bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi as Fra Melitone and bass Soloman Howard as both Leonora’s father and Padre Guardiano. The curtain rises at 9 a.m.
Civic engagement
- The Gig Harbor City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, at the Civic Center on Grandview Street. Tentative agenda items include adoption of a feasibility study for the phase 2/3 of the Sports Complex; discussion of an ordinance establishing new code compliance procedures; and a public hearing on the 2024 comprehensive plan amendments docket. The meeting can also be viewed via Zoom.
- The city Parks Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, to discuss the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team’s use of Skansie Park and to begin planning for this year’s Parks Appreciation Day.
- The city Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, to learn about updates to the city’s Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) code.
