Harbor Happenings | Easter egg hunts at Uptown, Sehmel and elsewhere

The annual Easter egg hunt at Uptown Gig Harbor is from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19. Dozens of eggs will be hidden (in plain sight) in the courtyard between Soma and Chicos.

PenMet Parks’ Spring Egg Hunt is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sehmel Homestead Park, 10123 78th Ave. The event features festive photos with Peter Cottontail. Register for your time here. An adaptive session starts at 1 p.m.

The Easter egg hunt at Uptown Gig Harbor.

The 62nd annual Olalla Easter Breakfast and egg hunt is also Saturday at South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Station 12, 8696 Olalla Valley Road. The egg hunt begins at 10 a.m., but hunters should arrive no later than 9:45. Or, come as early as 8 a.m. and enjoy a pancake breakfast prepared by the SKFR volunteer association and the firefighters’ union.

A little up the road in Port Orchard, the Kitsap Egg Hunt and Train Rides are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at South Kitsap Regional Park, 3101 SE Marbeth Lane. Egg hunts start at noon. Rides on miniature trains operated by Kitsap Live Steamers are free, but the organization accepts donations.

Great Sasquatch Hunt continues

This week, PenMet’s Sasquatch Hunt moves to Harbor Family Park, 6620 32nd St. NW, where five bigfoots are hiding, each with a stamp attached. Use the stamp to record the siting on your passport, which you can pick up at the kiosk there in the park.

If the stamp is missing or damaged, take a photo of the sasquatch and it will count as a stamp. When you’ve collected all five stamps (or photos), bring your completed passport to PenMet headquarters at 2416 14th Ave. NW Next week, the Sasquatch Hunt moves to McCormick Forest Park, 10301 Bujacich Road NW. Crew school

The next crew school class at the Gig Harbor BoatShop starts April 22. It’s a four-day hands-on experience that teaches the basic skills needed to be part of a purse seiner crew, and it’s a chance to learn if commercial fishing is a career for you.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and be able to pass a background check. The cost is $100. Sign-up here.

A new session of Crew School at the Gig Harbor BoatShop starts April 22.

At the library

Teen Tuesdays take place every week at the library from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for people ages 13 to 18. Activities include board games, craft projects, lively conversation and snacks.

On Wednesday, April 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. the library hosts Interactive Movie Day in which youth ages 9 to12 can act along with the latest Super Mario Brothers movie using a script and props like princess crowns, kazoos and rainbow streamers. There will also be snacks. Library activities are free.

Science Saturday

Harbor WildWatch’s Marine Science Center, 3207 Harborview Drive, offers free science-based hands-on activities for kids from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday. No reservations needed.

Live music

Singer-songwriter Angelina Adams plays classic rock, blues and original tunes in the loft at Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 18. Buy tickets here.

Fusion Axe band brings a mix of jazz, rock, soul and blues to Kimball Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday. Kimball also hosts an open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays. In April it’s called Hope’n Mic to benefit the Rebuilding Hope Sexual Assault Center that offers therapy, medical support, legal advocacy and more for victims of sexual assault in Pierce and Kitsap counties. At the movies

The Spring Fest movie Wednesday and Thursday (April 16 and 17) at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown is “Hop” showing at 10 a.m. and 3:30 pm. on Wednesday, and 11:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Starting Friday, April 18 it’s “The Cat in the Hat,” the animated version of the beloved Dr. Seuss story. Showtimes are 11:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 18; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20; and 11:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 21 and Tuesday, April 22. Spring Fest movies are just $2.

The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on Wednesday, April 16, is “The Goonies” playing at 12:30 and 6 p.m. On Sunday, April 20, the Flashback movie is “Pride and Prejudice,” the screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. The cast includes Keira Knightley, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, Judi Dench and Matthew Macfadyen. Showtimes are 12:30 and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 17 at the Civic Center on Grandview Street. The agenda includes updates on two street projects: the 38th Avenue half-width improvements and a project on Peacock Hill, and a proposed parking study.

The city Planning Commission meets Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to hear a general update on the city’s  Community Development department.

Attorneys from Tacomaprobono will answer questions about landlord-tenant isssues, eviction, family and consumer issues and other civil matters from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, April 21. Legal aid pop-ups are free and take place at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street.

The city of Gig Harbor hosts an open ouse from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the Civic Center to provide information about the Climate Element of the city’s comprehensive plan. The new element addresses challenges such as flooding, wildfire smoke, drought and other impacts caused by climate change.
