James Odes Hairston of Gig Harbor passed away on January 26, 2025, after a 10-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was a loving husband, father, and friend to many.

James was a veteran of the U.S Army (August 1964 – August 1967). He retired from the Tacoma Police Department in 2002 after 33 years of exemplary service, promoting through the ranks: police patrol officer, investigator/detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief, deputy chief, and serving as Chief of Police in his last 3 years with the department. During his time with the police department, he received the Lifesaving Award in 1973, the Medal of Merit in 1973, and the Medal of Merit in 1983.

James received his B.A. Degree in Law and Justice from Central Washington University. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, hiking, gardening, volunteering, writing poetry, and spending quality time with family and friends.

James was preceded in death by parents Frank and Sallie; his brothers: Joe, Frank Jr., and William. He is survived by wife Kim; daughter Sayana; sisters: Vina, Roberta, and Nancy (Ron); brothers: John (Cynthia), Clarence, and Chris (Cassandra).

The family expresses gratitude to Franciscan Hospice, also to the Gig Harbor Court assisted living community for their wonderful care and support.
