Harbor Happenings | August Art Walk is Saturday; here’s what you’ll see
This week’s dance card is filled with art, music, movies, beach walks and more.

Art Walk
Several downtown art galleries will host special activities during Art Walk on Saturday, Aug. 3 :
- Mavi Contemporary Art Gallery, 3126 Harborview Dr., has new work by Elizabeth Ashe, Robin Horminiuk and Nancy Nesvet. The artists will discuss their techniques and inspirations from 1-3 p.m.
- Bud vases, floral arrangements and flowers-by-the-stem are featured at Harbornest Decor and Designs, 3113 Harborview Dr.
- Lea Basile-Lazarus will demonstrate her artistic techniques at Ebb Tide Gallery, 7808 Pioneer Way.
- Suzie Cowan’s “Salish Sea” exhibition ends Saturday at Harbor History Museum, 4121 Harborview Dr. Museum admission is free, thanks to a grant from the city of Gig Harbor.
- Waters Edge Framery and Gallery, 7808 Pioneer Way, will offer 20% off on framing projects. If you purchase a print at the gallery on Saturday and have it framed that same day, you’ll save 25% off the total price.
- Woodstock Gift Gallery, 3120½ Harborview Dr., is featuring Houston Llew’s copper and glass Spiritiles, along with 10% off everything Saturday only.
Galleries are open from from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
National Night Out
The Gig Harbor Police Department will join cities across the country to celebrate National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. The local event at Skansie Park includes free food, root beer floats, kid’s games, community exhibits and music by Victims of Love.
Guided beach walks
This week’s low daytime tides will provide a good opportunity to see of some of the living things that inhabit our shorelines. Wear appropriate clothing and footgear and learn more as volunteers from Harbor WildWatch lead walks along these nearby beaches:
- Aug 2: Purdy Sand Spit Boat Ramp – meet at 10 a.m.
- Aug 3: DeMolay Sand Spit Nature Preserve on Fox Island – meet at 10 a.m.
- Aug 4: Olalla Boat Launch – meet at 11 a.m.
Waterfront tours
Every Wednesday and Saturday, volunteers from Harbor WildWatch, the Waterfront Alliance and Harbor History Museum lead walking tours along the downtown waterfront. The tours are free and geared primarily to adults, but all ages are welcome.
On Wednesdays, guides from Harbor History Museum lead “Skiffs to Spirits” walks from the museum, 4121 Harborview Dr., to Heritage Distillery and talk about the natural and cultural history of Gig Harbor. These walks start at 5:30 p.m. and end around 7 p.m.
The Saturday walks, dubbed “Wonders of the Waterfront,” start at 10 a.m. at Donkey Creek Park and follow the waterfront to the Maritime Pier.
Each tour is approximately 1.5 miles long. Transportation is not provided at the end of the tour, so plan accordingly.
Live music
The Summer Sounds concert at Skansie Park on Tuesday, July 30, showcases The ABBAgraphs. Music starts at 6 p.m. Bring a low back chair or a blanket and a picnic. Harbor WildWatch will have a touch tank set up on Jerisich dock during the concert. Free; all ages are welcome.
Wounded Mic plays a free concert at Sehmel Homestead Park starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. The park is located at 10123 78th Ave NW. Bring a blanket or low-back chair and a non-perishable item for the Kiwanis food drive.
Budapest West plays at the Uptown Pavilion at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. Free; all ages are welcome.
The award-winning CD Woodbury Trio brings their music to Kimball Coffeecouse on Kimball Drive on Friday, Aug. 2. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. Free; all ages are welcome.
At the movies
PenMet’s Summer Movies in the Park kick off Friday, Aug. 2, with a double feature: “The Incredibles,” showing at 5 p.m. and “National Treasure” playing at 7 p.m. at Semhel Homestead Park. Bring a blanket or low-back chair. The park is located at 10123 78th Ave NW.
The Met Summer Encore movie on Wednesday, July 31, at Galaxy Theater Uptown is La Cenerentola,” Rossini’s charming take on the Cinderella story. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and tenor Juan Diego Flórez star in Cesare Lievi’s whimsical production. Fabio Luisi conducts. Showtimes: 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Puccini’s masterpiece, “Turandot,” has a one-time showing at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. Soprano Nina Stemme and tenor Marco Berti star in a larger-than-life staging from director Franco Zeffirelli. Paolo Carignani conducts.
The SummerFest Movie at the Galaxy on July 31 and Aug. 1 is “An American Tail.” Showtimes are 10:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. July 31 and 10:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 1.
The SummerFest movie Aug. 2 though 8 is “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.” Showtimes are 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2, 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Aug. 3 and 4, and 10 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Aug. 5 through 8. SummerFest movies are just $2.
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on Wednesday, July 31, is “Dirty Dancing,” showing at 12:15 and 6:10 p.m. The Flashback movie on Sunday, Aug. 4, is “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” Showtimes are 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
Free summer lunches
Food Backpacks 4 Kids and Altrusa International provide free lunches at the Civic Center skate park, 3510 Grandview St., from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
