Harbor Happenings | July Art Walk is Saturday

Work by more than 50 artists will on display at downtown galleries during Art Walk, fr0m 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6.

Children who visit the Harbor History Museum during Art Walk can try their hand at creating greeting cards from sea-life collages on handmade marbled papers. Artist Suzie Cowan will lead the lessons starting at 11:30 a.m. She’s the featured artist at the museum and her nature-inspired work is on display in the museum’s main gallery.

The workshop is free for museum members or $5 for non-members. RSVP to [email protected]. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Dr.

Art-making demonstrations happen from 1 to 3 p.m. at most galleries.

At the library

Elementary-age kids and tweens can learn to make unique picture frames using ordinary rocks from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the library at 4424 Point Fosdick Drive. Free.
Family story time takes place every at 11 a.m. every Monday at the library, with stories, art activities, singing and fingerplay. Suitable for ages 6 and younger.

Walk along the waterfront

Harbor WildWatch volunteers lead a “Skiffs to Spirits” walk along the downtown waterfront — from the History Museum to Heritage Distillery — starting at 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday. A “Wonders of the Waterfront” walk starts at 10 a.m. every Saturday at Donkey Creek Park and ends at the Maritime Pier.

Live music

Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. Musicians, magicians, storytellers, dancers and any and all other performers are invited to share their talents with a friendly, supportive audience.
Floor to Ceiling brings their music to Kimball on Friday, July 5. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. Free, all ages are welcome. Kimball is at 6659 Kimball Dr.
Olalla Winery hosts The Gigsters at 6:30 p.m. Friday, playing covers of Steely Dan, Elton John, Tom Petty and some originals. $15. Saturday, it’s “Boots and Bubbly” country line dancing with Dancing Danielle, in the loft at the Winery. $20. Make reservations here for Olalla Winery events.

At the movies

“Spongebob Squarepants: Bigger, Better, More Absorbent” continues as the SumFest movie daily through Thursday at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown. Showtimes are 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
July 5 through July 11, the SumFest movie is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” Showtimes are 10:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on July 5, 8, 9, 10, 11; and 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. July 6 and 7. SumFest movies are just $2.
The Flashback Cinema movie on Wednesday, July 3, is “Jaws,” playing at noon and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “The Mask,” starring Jim Carrey. Sunday showtimes are 12:45 and 6 p.m.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 8, in the Civic Center. Tentative agenda items include adoption of the 2024-26 Strategic Plan and the annual crime report from Police Chief Kelly Busey.

Councilwoman Jeni Woock’s monthly “Jeni Listens” session at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, features a conversation with City Administrator Katrina Knutson. Jeni Listens takes place at Cutters Point Coffee Shop, 5500 Olympic Drive the first Tuesday of each month.

Fireworks

Fireworks are illegal within the Gig Harbor city limits. Across the bridge, Tacoma hosts its annual Summer Blast on the Ruston Way waterfront with festivities running from noon to 10:30 p.m. The fireworks show starts at 10 p.m.
