Harbor Happenings | Honor the fallen at Haven of Rest
Haven of Rest cemetery hosts its annual Memorial Day ceremony at noon Monday, May 27.

The event includes guest speakers, musical performances and a free hot dog lunch after the program. More than 2,200 veterans are buried at the cemetery.
Haven of Rest is located at 8503 Highway 16, between the Wollochet and Burnham exits from westbound 16.
Monday Night Movie
The Gig Harbor Film Festival presents its monthly Monday Night Movie on May 27. This month it’s “Holy Frit,” the story of a talented but unknown artist who bluffs his way into winning a commission to create the biggest stained-glass window of its kind – nearly the size of a basketball court. The problem is, he has no idea how to make it until he finds a world-famous glass maestro. Holy Frit plays one-time-only at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $14.50. Get them here.
For book lovers
Author Lawrence Ingrasia discusses his book “A Fatal Inheritance – How a Family Misfortune Revealed a Deadly Medical Mystery” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Invitation Books. It’s about the author’s family history of cancer, important cancer research and hope for the future. Ingrasia will also sign copies of his book. Invitation Books is located at 5125 Olympic Drive #104.
Children’s theater
The children who study with Gig Harbor-based French Toast Theater will perform Disney’s “Newsies, Jr.” Saturday, May 25 at 5 p.m. The performance location is 1202 N. Orchard St. in Tacoma. For tickets go here.
Registration is now open for kids ages 9-14 for French Toast’s summer production of “Seussical the Musical.” Find information here.
Teen Movie Night at the library
Teen Movie Night, for ages 13 to 18, takes place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Gig Harbor Library at 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. The teens will pick between “Moana” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Pizza and snacks will be provided. Free; no registration necessary.
Live music
The Profits play a gig at Kimball Coffeeshop at 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, with Sheena Denney opening. All ages are welcome at the free performance.
The Olalla Winery hosts The Gigsters at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 24. The set list includes covers of Steely Dan, Elton John and Tom Petty, plus some original tunes. Tickets are $15 here.
At the movies
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Uptown Galaxy Theaters on Wednesday, May 22, is “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” playing at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is 1980s classic “Back to the Future.” “Back to the Future” also plays Monday, May 27, and Wednesday, May 29. Showtimes are noon and 6 p.m. on Sunday; 1 p.m. May 27; noon and 6 p.m. May 29.
Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Civic Center on Grandview Street. Agenda items include discussing a contract for updating the Transportation Element of the comprehensive plan and a conservation futures stewardship agreement. Council meetings are also accessible via Zoom.
