Harbor Happenings | School district choral festival is Friday

Gig Harbor High School hosts the Peninsula School District’s choral festival at 7 p.m. Friday, April 12. Choirs from all the district’s secondary schools will perform. The program is free, but seating is first-come, first served. GHHS is located at 5101 Rosedale Street.

3 Trick Pony plays their rendition of classic rock and funky tunes Friday at the Olalla Winery. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. with a $15 cover. Make reservations here.

Steve Bailey and the Blue Flames play at Kimball Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday. Bailey is considered one of the best blues harp players in the Northwest. He won the Washington Blues Society’s Best Harmonica and Best Band awards and the 2015 the Hall of Fame Blues Band award. Doors open at 6 p.m. Free, all ages welcome.

Spring plant swap

The Gig Harbor Spring Plant Swap starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, in the parking lot next to Home Goods in Uptown Gig Harbor.

The swap is open to anyone who likes to garden, wants to meet other gardeners or just wants to learn more about what grows well here. Bring plants or seeds to trade, or just come to get acquainted. The swap lasts until 11a.m., rain or shine.

Wildside Walk: A Harbor WildWatch naturalist will lead for a guided tour along the waterfront at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, to learn more about the wildlife and underwater critters that call Gig Harbor home. The half-mile walk starts at the pavilion at Skansie Park and ends at the old ferry landing at the mouth of the harbor.

Wine tasting: Sample made-in-Gig-Harbor wines from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Two Loons winery, 9422 22nd Ave. NW. Tastings include a 2020 Avarinho and a selection of the winemaker’s favorite reds.

At the library: In celebration of April, National Poetry Month, the Teen Tuesday program at the Gig Harbor library on April 16 is Black Out Poetry. Teen Tuesday events start at 3:30 p.m. every week and include free snacks and games. Open to ages 12-18. The library is at 4424 Point Fosdick Dr.

At the movies: The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Uptown Theatres on Wednesday, April 10, is “The Godfather.” The movie plays at 11:15 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “The Dark Night,” considered by many to be the best Batman movie ever. The Dark Night plays at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies cost just $5.

Civic engagement: The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at the civic center on Grandview St. Agenda items include introduction of new arts and parks commissioners; a recap of the 2024 legislative session; a discussion of the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team’s use of Skansie Park. City staff will provide an update on the short term rental program. The meeting can also be viewed via zoom.
