Harbor Happenings | Easter egg hunts for all (or at least most) ages
PenMet Parks’ Teen Flashlight Egg Hunt starts at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Sehmel Homestead Park. The search for hidden eggs will be followed by an after-hunt party with a DJ, games, snacks and more. Bring a flashlight.

PenMet also hosts a kid-focused spring egg hunt from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, on the softball fields at Sehmel. The event is free, but donation of nonperishable food is encouraged.

‘Sound of Music’ at Gig Harbor High School
The Gig Harbor High School drama department presents the ever-popular “Sound of Music” on March 29 and 30 and April 5 and 6.
Set in Austria in 1938, it’s the story of an exuberant young governess who brings music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger as the Nazis gain power. Members of the GHHS band will provide the live music.
The school is collecting donations for Food Backpacks4Kids at each performance. Buy tickets here.

Wine tasting at Two Loons
Gig Harbor’s Two Loons winery will offer sips of several locally produced reds from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 30. Stop by and sample their 2023 Roussanne, NV Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Merlot and the 2018 Cabernet Franc. Two Loons is located at 9422 22nd Ave. Northwest.

- Kimball Gallery hosts a free all-ages, all-talents-welcome open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays.
- Two Strings and a Box play covers of tunes by Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot and others at Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 29. Make reservations here.
Book group
The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 , at the Harbor History Museum to discuss “Four Treasures of the Sky” by Jenny Xhang. It’s the story of a young Chinese girl who is kidnapped and smuggled across the ocean, then fights to claim her place in the American West during the time of the Chinese Exclusion Act. All book-lovers are welcome whether or not you’ve read the book.
Steinbeck and the ‘Western Flyer’
Shipwright Tim Lee will discuss rebuilding the “Western Flyer” at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30 in the Eddon Boatyard House.
Built at Tacoma’s Western Boat Building Company in 1937, novelist John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts chartered ‘Western Flyer’ in 1940 by for a trip to the Sea of Cortez. Steinbeck write “The Log from the Sea of Cortez” about the trip. The Boatyard House is the red brick house next door to the BoatShop, located at 3805 Harborview Dr.
Art display at the museum
Paintings by Sue Kopp Casillas, inspired by the molas of the San Blas Islands of Panama, are on display in the lobby of the Harbor History Museum.
Casillas began collecting the “reverse applique” textiles when she and her family lived in Panama and traveled through Latin America. Her paintings mimic the mola style, overpainting existing artworks but leaving open areas that reveal the images painted beneath. She calls this exhibit “Avian Dreams.” The museum at 4121 Harborview Drive is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
At the movies
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres Uptown on Wednesday, March 27, is “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” playing at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Flashback movie on Sunday, March 31, is “Pride and Prejudice,” the adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Pride and Prejudice plays at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Civic Center on Grandview Street. The agenda includes a review of Council Guidelines and Procedures and a discussion of possible locations for a new well. Council meetings can also be accessed via Zoom.
