Harbor Happenings | Delicious soup, beautiful bowls and a good cause

Buy a bowl, fill it with soup and know that you’re contributing to a good cause on Saturday, March 2, during the Empty Bowls event staged by the Gig Harbor chapter of Altrusa International.

Local potters have created more than 800 bowls and a dozen restaurants are donating soup. Empty Bowls participants buy a handmade bowl, fill it with locally produced soup and enjoy a tasty meal. The customer keeps the bowl as a reminder of the event and of the many empty bowls in the community.

Participating restaurants include Sunset Grill, BBQ2U, KettleFish of Silverdale, Massimo Italian Bar and Grill, Kinza Teriyaki, Table 47, Harbor Greens, Anthony’s, Moctezuma’s and B’s Bagels & Butters.

Altrusa uses funds raised during Empty Bowls to support organizations that help feed hungry children and families within Peninsula School District boundaries.

Pier into the Night

Saturday is the last Pier into the Night of the 2023-’24 season.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Maritime Pier next to the Tides restaurant. Divers will live-stream video of the critters they encounter in the water while Harbor WildWatch biologists discuss what is being projected on a big screen set up on the pier. There will also be touch tanks with live specimens of some of the species that live in the water beneath the pier.

The event is free but donations of $2 per person or $5 per family are appreciated.

FISH food drive

The first Friday and Saturday of every month, Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank holds a food drive at the local Safeway stores. Donations are accepted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 1 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2.

Art Walk

Works by more than 50 local artists will be on display and available for purchase at galleries along the downtown waterfront during the March Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2.

Several galleries will offer painting demonstrations by member artists:

Ebbtide Gallery, 7809 Pioneer Way: watercolor artist Kathy Thurston will show how she creates her Chinese ink paintings.
Woodstock Gift Gallery, 3120 1/2 Harborview Drive: retired broadcaster Steve West will talk about his photos that document the beauty of Washington state.
Mavi Contemporary Art Gallery, 3126 Harborview Drive: Lea Lazarus and Steve Hammond will discuss their work.
Local Whimsey, 3306 Harborview Drive: Muralist Hillarie Isackson
Harbornest Décor and Designs, 3311 Harborview Drive: Molly Marigold.

All demos take place from 1-3 p.m.

Gig Harborites play in Tacoma

The Tacoma Youth Symphony performs music by two distinctly different composers – Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and Afro-American composer William Grant Still — at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma.

Nearly a dozen Gig Harbor students are members of TYSA’s primary orchestra and will perform Sunday. Another 16 are members of TYSA’s four other orchestras.

Flashback Cinema

The Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy Theatres Uptown on Wednesday, Feb. 28, is Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Showtimes are noon and 6 p.m. The Flashback movie on Sunday, March 3, is “The Land Before Time” showing at noon and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
