The district announced the investigation in a statement sent to reporters on Monday, Sept. 18, adding that it will make no public comment about its investigation, citing privacy concerns.
Calhoun sustained a serious injury during the second quarter of the game, a 21-20 Gig Harbor win. The sophomore was chasing an interception return when two Peninsula blockers hit him.
The QB was down on the field for about 25 minutes before medics took him off the field on a stretcher. Game officials penalized the Seahawks for unsportsmanlike conduct.
“The injured Gig Harbor player is in the thoughts of our district and school leaders, and we are all hopeful for a speedy recovery,” according to a statement from Peninsula School District.
First responders were on scene
Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One EMTs were on scene for the game. They were responding to another call at the stadium when the injury occurred.
The district’s two new school safety officers also attended, as did law enforcement and school staff and administrators, to maintain order.
Fans and families traded accusations on social media after the game occurred, with each side accusing the other of acting inappropriately.
“Once the investigation is complete, PSD administrators will determine if additional safety protocols are needed for future events,” the district’s statement said.
