Port Orchard man dies in crash near Purdy
A Port Orchard man was killed Wednesday morning when the car in which he was riding went off the road near Purdy and crashed into a ditch.
A 34-year-old Port Orchard woman was driving a 2005 Lexus RX on Purdy Drive (Highway 302 spur), just west of Goodnough Drive at 5:10 a.m. She fell asleep, according to a Washington State Patrol report.
The car drifted across the eastbound lanes, left the road on the left side and came to rest in a ditch.
Robert Reyes, 34, died at the scene. The driver was injured and taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma. A 6-year-old boy was hurt and taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma. An 11-year-old boy was not injured. Both boys also are from Port Orchard.
The driver is the only one who was wearing a seat belt, according to the State Patrol. She has been cited on suspicion of second-degree negligent driving and failing to use a child safety restraint.
The highway was blocked for three hours.
