Trevor Grayson, a senior at Gig Harbor High School, credits his cross-country and track coach, Patty Ley, for showing him what dedication and consistent hard work can achieve.

“When I first joined the team, her guidance not only improved my running, allowing me to compete at the varsity level and earn a letter, but it also taught me a work ethic that I’ve applied in other areas of my life,” Trevor explains.

Planning for the future

After graduation, Trevor plans to attend Texas A&M University to study nuclear physics. He has an interest in nuclear fusion technologies and is also joining the university’s Corps of Cadets program, hoping to serve in the military after completing his degree.

“This will expose me to the various branches of the military and prepare me for a career dedicated to serving my country,” he says.

High school memories

Trevor cherishes the friendships he made during high school, especially in clubs like STEAM and Knowledge Bowl. “The connections I made in those clubs have given me some of my best memories,” he reflects. The camaraderie and support from his peers allowed him to explore his interests and build lasting relationships.

Advice for incoming freshmen

Trevor encourages incoming freshmen to embrace high school opportunities and not be afraid to step out of their comfort zones. “Join clubs, participate in sports, and don’t worry if you’re not familiar with something—there are always passionate people to guide you,” he advises. He emphasizes that high school is about exploration, and the best way to make friends is to get involved.

Community engagement

Trevor is deeply involved in community service, with over 100 volunteer hours with PenMet Parks as a member of their Teen Advisory Committee. Trevor finds it rewarding to give back to the community, creating and hosting events for teens. He also tutors students in math and chemistry.
