Robert Mack-Ward, a senior at Henderson Bay High School, has navigated considerable challenges with the support of a strong community.

As an emancipated minor, gaining his independence at just 16 years old, he faced obstacles that could have derailed his education. However, thanks to mentors like Robin Malich from Communities in Schools, he found the guidance he needed to stay on track.

“Robin was there for my sister, then for me,” says Robert. Her commitment to providing essential resources like school supplies and clothes through Kiwanis helped him focus on his studies and succeed. After graduation, plans to attend The Evergreen State College to study environmental science.

Creating strong bonds

As he prepares to leave Henderson Bay High School, Robert reflects on the close relationships he’s formed with teachers and classmates. “This school became my second home,” he says. The sense of belonging he felt in clubs like STEAM and Knowledge Bowl has left him with unforgettable memories and lasting friendships.

Advice for incoming freshmen

Robert advises incoming freshmen to stay calm and embrace the journey. “Don’t be afraid to join clubs or sports, even if you’re not sure what they do,” he suggests. He emphasizes the importance of asking questions and seeking help when needed. “That was one of my biggest mistakes during my freshman year,” he recalls. However, by reaching out for support, he was able to improve his grades and find success.

Achievements/Activities: Robert recently completed a week-long service trip to Guatemala. Arranged by the Gig Harbor Rotary Club, he was able to tour the country while helping and supporting families in need.

Favorite Teacher: Robert’s favorite teacher is Janelle, (many Henderson Bay teachers go by their first name) who has been incredibly understanding of his personal struggles and their impact on his academic performance. “She encourages me to show up and do my best each day with her positive, happy-go-lucky attitude,” Robert says.

Best Thing About High School: For Robert, the best thing about Henderson Bay High School is its smaller environment, where teachers and students create a tight-knit community. This supportive atmosphere has played a significant role in his success, giving him the patience and encouragement he needed to thrive.
