Gabriella Hernandez, a senior at Peninsula High School, draws inspiration from many people, including her teachers, family, and friends. She recalls how her fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Kinney, encouraged her to work hard without stressing over perfectionism.

“Ms. Kinney taught me that I was good enough and could achieve anything I set my mind to,” she says. Her family also played a pivotal role in her journey, supporting her through challenging times and reminding her of her accomplishments.

A path with purpose

Gabriella plans to study sociology at the University of San Diego, with a focus on foster care and adoption. Her goal is to ultimately become a social worker who helps children in underprivileged communities.

“This profession means a lot to me and has become my passion,” Gabriella explains.

Advice to incoming freshmen

Gabriella’s advice to incoming freshmen is to avoid the trap of perfectionism. “Perfectionism is dangerous,” she warns. “It limits your ability to enjoy high school.” She encourages freshmen to get involved in school activities and make the most of their high school years, emphasizing that these experiences can help them grow and make lasting connections.

Resilience through adversity

Gabriella Hernandez openly discusses her ongoing battle with anxiety and depression, emphasizing that her struggles don’t define her — they’re part of her journey, but not the whole story.

“I know how to deal with my struggles and how to pick myself up when I’m down,” she explains.

Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Gabriella has found the strength to persevere. She acknowledges that the path has not been easy, but it’s her ability to adapt and grow from adversity that has shaped her into the resilient person she is today. “I believe that I have overcome a lot of punches and struggles one after another, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

Favorite Teacher: Gabriella’s favorite teacher, Mr. Miranda, has been a guiding light throughout her high school journey. “He taught me the importance of embracing my true self, undeterred by the judgments of others,” she explains. “More than just a teacher, he’s been a steadfast supporter and mentor,” she adds.

Best thing about high school: For Gabriella, the best part of high school was being in ASB. “It’s become my second family,” she says. ASB provided a supportive environment where she could grow as a leader and make a difference in the school community. Gabriella cherishes the memories and lessons she gained from ASB and is grateful for the impact it had on her personal and academic growth.
